Mental speed doesn’t begin to decline until as late as age 60, study indicates https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/mental-speed-doesnt-begin-to-decline-until-as-late-as-age-60-study-indicates/ https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/mental-speed-doesnt-begin-to-decline-until-as-late-as-age-60-study-indicates/#respond Thu, 13 Apr 2023 17:06:47 +0000 https://cristoniano.com/?p=582 According to new research published in Nature Human Behaviour, slowing in response time can begin as early as age 20. However, this change can be explained by increased caution in decision making and slowing of non-decisional processes, as opposed to a slowing in mental speed. Slowing of mental speed was observed only after age 60.

Numerous research findings point to a negative association between mental speed and age, with older (vs. younger) people performing more slowly across various cognitive tasks. Most of the studies on the relation between age and mental speed have relied on average response time “in elementary cognitive tasks (for example, comparison of two letters) as a measure of basic speed of information processing,” write Mischa von Krause and colleagues.

Measuring Nature’s Effects on Physical and Mental Health https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/measuring-natures-effects-on-physical-and-mental-health/ https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/measuring-natures-effects-on-physical-and-mental-health/#respond Thu, 13 Apr 2023 17:05:49 +0000 https://cristoniano.com/?p=579 oth factors negatively correlated with age, indicating diminishing confidence that could be related to mobility or safety concerns that increase as adults age.

Male respondents had higher self-efficacy than female respondents, a finding that agrees with other research showing that women are less likely to participate in recreational activities in nature despite showing a preference for doing so.

Development of the scales is just the first step of what the researchers hope will be a series of studies with the ultimate goal of finding ways to improve health and well-being through increased TSN.

“We’re working on developing a whole suite of measures,” Maddock said. “Once those are done, we’re going to be looking to develop theory-based interventions to increase time spent in nature.”

New discovery of 4.2 billion-year-old fossil may reveal Earth’s oldest life https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/new-discovery-of-4-2-billion-year-old-fossil-may-reveal-earths-oldest-life/ https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/new-discovery-of-4-2-billion-year-old-fossil-may-reveal-earths-oldest-life/#respond Thu, 13 Apr 2023 17:04:10 +0000 https://cristoniano.com/?p=576 Scientists may have found proof of the oldest life on Earth. According to the new evidence, life on Earth may have begun as early as 300 million years after Earth first formed. The previous confirmed oldest life on Earth was dated around 3.5-3.7 billion years old. Many scientists believe the Earth formed around 4.5 billion years ago. That makes these new microfossils a startling 4.2 billion years old, if proven correct.

The discovery that the oldest life on Earth may have formed so early is exciting for a number of reasons. First, it shows that life was finding a way even back when the Earth wasn’t as habitable as it is now. Second, the scientists involved believe that these types of microfossils could also exist as signs of life on alien planets.

How to survive a tactical nuclear bomb? Defense experts explain https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/how-to-survive-a-tactical-nuclear-bomb-defense-experts-explain/ https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/how-to-survive-a-tactical-nuclear-bomb-defense-experts-explain/#respond Thu, 13 Apr 2023 17:01:54 +0000 https://cristoniano.com/?p=573 There has been widespread discussion of Russia’s threat to use tactical nuclear weapons in its war on Ukraine.

Russia is estimated to have thousands of tactical nuclear weapons—possibly the world’s largest stockpile—which could be deployed at any time. The use of nuclear weapons is also embedded in Russian military doctrine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appealed to the rest of the world to take the threat seriously.

In this article we examine what would happen during a tactical nuclear bomb explosion, including the three stages of ignition, blast and —and how one might be able to survive this.

Emotional abuse during childhood is linked to alcohol-related problems in later life through increased insomnia https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/emotional-abuse-during-childhood-is-linked-to-alcohol-related-problems-in-later-life-through-increased-insomnia/ https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/emotional-abuse-during-childhood-is-linked-to-alcohol-related-problems-in-later-life-through-increased-insomnia/#respond Thu, 13 Apr 2023 16:59:40 +0000 https://cristoniano.com/?p=570 A recent study suggests that children who suffer emotional abuse go on to experience increased insomnia, and in turn, more alcohol-related problems during adulthood. The researchers behind the study suggest that addressing childhood trauma may be one avenue of treatment for dysregulated drinking. The findings were published in the journal Addictive Behaviors Reports.

People who suffer from trauma often experience sleep disturbances. The Hyperarousal Theory says this is because trauma activates the body’s fight-or-flight response, which triggers the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and sympathetic nervous system and interferes with sleep quality.

In turn, there appears to be a connection between insomnia and alcohol-related problems. For example, there is some evidence that insomnia makes people more susceptible to the negative repercussions of alcohol. Study authors Julie Patock-Peckham and her colleagues wondered whether insomnia brought on by childhood trauma might contribute to problematic drinking in later life.

The Challenges of Studying Marijuana’s Effects on the Heart and Brain https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/the-challenges-of-studying-marijuanas-effects-on-the-heart-and-brain/ https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/the-challenges-of-studying-marijuanas-effects-on-the-heart-and-brain/#respond Thu, 13 Apr 2023 16:58:11 +0000 https://cristoniano.com/?p=567 How often a person uses marijuana, how much they use and for how long matters, Gruber said. For example, people may initially experience a rapid heart rate, called tachycardia, from products containing THC. But consistent use may result in tolerance to that effect, often after a few days or weeks.

In clinical studies, researchers measure and control what people are consuming. But because the federal government still classifies marijuana as a schedule 1 substance, meaning it is considered to have a high potential for abuse, researchers face tough restrictions on the products they can give study participants.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse Drug Supply Program provides marijuana for research purposes, Gruber said. But research-grade marijuana isn’t what people are consuming in their homes.

Five Diseases Attack Language Areas in Brain https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/five-diseases-attack-language-areas-in-brain/ https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/five-diseases-attack-language-areas-in-brain/#respond Thu, 13 Apr 2023 16:54:03 +0000 https://cristoniano.com/?p=564 There are five different diseases that attack the language areas in the left hemisphere of the brain that slowly cause progressive impairments of language known as primary progressive aphasia (PPA), reports a new Northwestern Medicine study.

“We’ve discovered each of these diseases hits a different part of the language network,” said lead author Dr. M. Marsel Mesulam, director of Northwestern’s Mesulam Center for Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer’s Disease.

“In some cases, the disease hits the area responsible for grammar, in others the area responsible for word comprehension. Each disease progresses at a different rate and has different implications for intervention.”

Study identifies brain mechanism that may drive the link between childhood deprivation and trait anxiety https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/study-identifies-brain-mechanism-that-may-drive-the-link-between-childhood-deprivation-and-trait-anxiety/ https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/study-identifies-brain-mechanism-that-may-drive-the-link-between-childhood-deprivation-and-trait-anxiety/#respond Thu, 13 Apr 2023 16:46:56 +0000 https://cristoniano.com/?p=561 New research suggests that socioeconomic hardship during childhood leaves children vulnerable to lower cognitive ability in adolescence and increased trait anxiety during adulthood. The findings, published in the journal Social Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience, further suggest that these effects are driven by the recruitment of the right lateral prefrontal cortex.

Growing up in poverty can have negative repercussions on mental health. For example, children who grow up in socioeconomic deprivation demonstrate lower cognitive ability and report higher trait anxiety as young adults. Researchers Pavla Čermáková and her team launched a study to investigate this interplay between early socioeconomic difficulty, cognitive ability, and trait anxiety and to shed light on the neural mechanism behind these relationships.

When Will Humanity Become a Type I Civilization? https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/when-will-humanity-become-a-type-i-civilization/ https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/13/when-will-humanity-become-a-type-i-civilization/#respond Thu, 13 Apr 2023 16:45:25 +0000 https://cristoniano.com/?p=558 There are several ways we can measure the progress of human civilization. Population growth, the rise and fall of empires, our technological ability to reach for the stars. But one simple measure is to calculate the amount of energy humans use at any given time. As humanity has spread and advanced, our ability to harness energy is one of our most useful skills. If one assumes civilizations on other planets might possess similar skills, the energy consumption of a species is a good rough measure of its technological prowess. This is the idea behind the Kardashev Scale.

Russian astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev proposed the scale in 1964. He categorized civilizations into three types: planetary, stellar, and galactic. A Type I species is able to harness energy on a scale equal to the amount stellar energy that reaches its home planet. Type II species can harness energy on the scale of its home star, and Type III can harness the energy of its home galaxy. The idea was further popularized by Carl Sagan, who suggested a continuous scale of measurement rather than simply three types.
