For 40 years, she has been digging into the biggest secrets of the cosmos, patiently whittling down uncertainties to find the value of a number that defines the expansion of the universe, determines its age and seals its ultimate fate.

Freedman, who works at the University of Chicago, studies the Hubble constant, a number that represents how fast the expansion of the universe is accelerating. We have known about this escalating expansion since 1929, when US astronomer Edwin Hubble found that the more distant an object was, the faster it seemed to be moving away from us.

That is when things got tricky. Pinning down the numbers requires accurate measurements of astronomical distances. In Hubble’s era, astronomical images were taken by shining light through a telescope onto a photographic plate. Calculating distances from those images was difficult and imprecise.

Circuit Model May Explain How Deep Brain Stimulation Treats Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/18/circuit-model-may-explain-how-deep-brain-stimulation-treats-parkinsons-disease-symptoms/ https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/18/circuit-model-may-explain-how-deep-brain-stimulation-treats-parkinsons-disease-symptoms/#respond Tue, 18 Apr 2023 20:21:46 +0000 https://cristoniano.com/?p=849 When DBS high-frequency stimulation is applied to the STN, the model shows, that replaces the overwhelming beta input received by the FSIs and restores their excitability.

Reinvigorated and freed from those beta shackles, the interneurons resume producing gamma oscillations (at about half the DBS stimulation frequency, typically at 135 Hz) that then suppress the beta activity of the MSNs. With the MSNs no longer producing too much beta, the loop leading back to the STN and then to the FSIs is no longer dominated by that frequency.

“DBS stops the beta from propagating towards FSIs so that it is no longer amplified, and then, by additionally exciting FSIs, restores the ability of FSIs to produce strong gamma oscillations, that will in turn inhibit beta at its source,” Adam said.

How a verbal paradox shattered the notion of total certainty in mathematics https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/18/how-a-verbal-paradox-shattered-the-notion-of-total-certainty-in-mathematics/ https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/18/how-a-verbal-paradox-shattered-the-notion-of-total-certainty-in-mathematics/#respond Tue, 18 Apr 2023 20:20:52 +0000 https://cristoniano.com/?p=847 Dating back to ancient Greece, the idea that any mathematical statement can ultimately be proven true or false, and any apparent contradiction ultimately erased, was as enticing as it was intuitive for many logicians and mathematicians. However, this long-dominant belief was upended in the early 20th century when the logician Kurt Gödel converted a written paradox – ‘This statement cannot be proved’ – into an equation, shattering the notion that mathematics could be built on structures of total certainty. This animation from TED-Ed traces how Gödel was able to use words to transform mathematics forever, and how his ‘incompleteness theorem’ has led to breakthroughs in both his field and the digital world.

25 Things from Everyday Life in the Middle Ages https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/18/25-things-from-everyday-life-in-the-middle-ages/ https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/18/25-things-from-everyday-life-in-the-middle-ages/#respond Tue, 18 Apr 2023 20:05:37 +0000 https://cristoniano.com/?p=844 If you lived during the Middle Ages, what kind of things would you have? Here is a guide to some of the everyday items that a medieval person would have used or had.

Anvils – one of the instruments typically used by blacksmiths, anvils are heavy blocks of metal. When working with iron or types of metal, the blacksmith would put those pieces on an anvil and use a hammer to hit the piece into shape, creating things like armour, weapons or tools.

In What Language Is a Bilingual or Multilingual Person Most Likely to Dream? https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/18/in-what-language-is-a-bilingual-or-multilingual-person-most-likely-to-dream/ https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/18/in-what-language-is-a-bilingual-or-multilingual-person-most-likely-to-dream/#respond Tue, 18 Apr 2023 20:04:22 +0000 https://cristoniano.com/?p=842 There have been very few studies on bilingualism and multilingualism and how they affect dreams. These are small studies, but they certainly find that people who speak any second language, even without good proficiency, at least occasionally dream in the second language.

One study asked the subjects what they thought made the difference, and they said that it was determined by the people and or the setting that was being dreamed about.

If you thought of your family back in your country of origin, it’d likely be in that language regardless of whether it was now your dominant language. And if you were dreaming about people you’ve known as a young adult, living in another setting where you spoke a different language, you’d be dreaming in that language.

Psychedelics: How They Act on the Brain to Relieve Depression https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/18/psychedelics-how-they-act-on-the-brain-to-relieve-depression/ https://sobrelavidafeliz.com/2023/04/18/psychedelics-how-they-act-on-the-brain-to-relieve-depression/#respond Tue, 18 Apr 2023 20:03:13 +0000 https://cristoniano.com/?p=839 Up to 30% of people with depression don’t respond to treatment with antidepressants. This may be down to differences in biology between patients and the fact that it often takes a long time to respond to the drugs – with some people giving up after a while. So there is an urgent need to expand the repertoire of drugs available to people with depression.

In recent years, attention has turned to psychedelics such as psilocybin, the active compound in “magic mushrooms”. Despite a number of clinical trials showing that psilocybin can rapidly treat depression, including for cancer-related anxiety and depression, little is known about how psilocybin actually works to relieve depression in the brain.

Now two recent studies, published in The New England Journal of Medicine and Nature Medicine, have shed some light on this mysterious process.
